This new addition to the Global Network of 14 FabCafes will focus on fostering innovative collaborations between the local textile industry and all kinds of creators

On Sunday 6 November 2022, FabCafe Fuji will open its doors in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture, a town located at the foot of Mount Fuji. It is the 14th FabCafe worldwide and the fifth in Japan, following Tokyo, Kyoto, Hida and Nagoya.

FabCafe Fuji is located on a picturesque street with a stunning view of Mt. Fuji that you will probably have seen featured in the best guides of Japan! In addition to the café, the space includes a library corner presenting relevant publications on art, architecture and textiles; an area to use a risograph printing machine; and a co-working space. FabCafe Fuji aims to foster a creative community centered on ‘textiles’ in Fujiyoshida, a traditional textile production area.

Creators turn to Fujiyoshida, a textile hub with a thousand years of history

Fujiyoshida is located one and a half hours away from Tokyo by bus. For over 1,000 years, the city has flourished as a textile town thanks to its lush green landscape and the blessings of cool, clear water flowing down from Mt Fuji. Nowadays, Fujiyoshida is also garnering wide attention as a place that continues to connect tradition with bold innovation, as it organizes all sorts of exciting events and exhibitions where the local hataya (weaving factories) collaborate with a wide variety of creators and artists to tackle the creation of new textile values.

FabCafe Fuji will be operated by DOSO Inc., which aims to bring new life to the region and empower the next generations

FabCafe Fuji is operated by DOSO, an enterprise led by Tsuyoshi Yagi which aims to give new life to vacant houses by renovating them, passing on their value and history, creating new usage opportunities, and improving the townscape around them. DOSO has operated the popular Saruya Hostel and Saruya Artist Residency in Fujiyoshida since 2015, and will now open FabCafe Fuji as the next step to foster local creativity.

Greetings from Tsuyoshi Yagi

“Fujiyoshida boasts a proud history of textile manufacturing that expands over a century. We want to support novel forms of industrial tradition, and provide a space where both the local community and occasional visitors can chat over good food and share the pleasure of creation.

Along with the delicious menu, I hope that the different spaces of FabCafe Fuji, such as its cozy library corner, as well as the events that we are going to organize regularly, will fill with joy the daily lives of both the people who visit and the staff who work here.”

A nature-friendly, ethical and carefully selected food and drink menu

The FabCafe Fuji menu features homemade sausages, spiced curry, lasagne, fermented foods and vegetarian options. Each plate is prepared using ethically conscious and carefully selected ingredients.
